The Foreign Policy Research Institute of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (hereafter referred to as ‘the Institute’) was established on the 20 April 2006 by the Decree of the Rector of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine with the aim to conduct scientific research in the field of international relations, foreign policy and international security.
The Foreign Policy Research Institute is directly run by Professor, Doctor of Political Sciences Grygoriy Perepelytsia.
The Institute’s main goals:
- to provide a complex study of Ukraine's and other countries' foreign policy, applied problems of international relations and international security;
- to develop the conceptual principles of Ukraine's foreign policy, practical recommendations and forecasts for solving urgent problems of contemporary international relations and Ukraine's foreign policy, to facilitate its openness and predictability;
- to participate in the implementation of international scientific and educational programs in the field of international relations, foreign policy and international security.
The Institute fulfils tasks associated with current matters of Ukraine’s foreign policy on individual instructions of the management of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
Scientific research lines:
-foreign policy of Ukraine: priority lines, strategies and implementation tools;
-problems in the international relations and science of conflicts;
-international security.
The Institute involves highly qualified specialists and experts from offices and organizations for the purpose of conducting scientific research.
Forms of the Institute's activities:
-conducting scientific research both on the Institute’s own initiative and at the request of Ukraine's state institutions;
-enforcement and implementation of scientific projects, scientific and educational programmes;
-conducting the expert evaluation of the drafts of both legislative and other national and international normative documents in the sphere of foreign policy and international security;
-consulting both governmental and non-governmental organizations;
-publishing monographies and analytical reports;
-popularizing the topics corresponding to the Institute's lines of activities in the mass-media;
-publishing of the year-book “Ukraine’s Foreign Policy: Strategic Evaluations, Prognoses and Priorities” and the quarterly almanac “International Review”;
-holding the conferences, public lectures, seminars and round-tables on core topics of the Institute.
International Co-operation:
The Institute closely co-operates with Ukraine’s analytical centres and scientific institutions, as well as maintains connections with foreign research institutions. The Institute is involved in international research projects and events in the field of international policy and security and takes lead in the implementation of urgent international initiatives. To develop close cooperation with foreign analytical centres and scientific institutions of the same category is one of the main tasks of the Institute in the field of international cooperation.

- the year-book “Ukraine’s Foreign Policy: Strategic Evaluations, Prognoses and Priorities”;
- the quarterly almanac “International Review”.
The year-book “Ukraine’s Foreign Policy: Strategic Evaluations, Prognoses and Priorities” does not represent an official position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Its goal is to provide a complex analysis of Ukraine's foreign policy, its key tendencies inherent to in the current year, and to present possible scenarios of their development, as well as to determine the priority lines when enforcing the country’s foreign political course. The prognosticative value of the publication predominantly is in the possibility of taking a look in the future based on the complex evaluation of the past, seeing the consequences of taken political decisions, foreseeing future challenges and making suggestions of the timely preventive measures.
The scientific-analytical part of the year-book, presented as conclusions and evaluations of the leading experts in the international relations, is joined with the informative materials supplied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The book is called to stimulate Ukraine’s both politicum and scientific community to enter into discussion and to look for ways of solving foreign policy problems as well as of improving the country’s foreign policy activities. The year-book is designed for a broad variety of national and foreign experts, academics, Ukrainian diplomatic corps, Ukraine’s Embassies abroad and foreign missions to Ukraine, along with the readers interested in foreign policy and international relations.
The year-book is published in the Ukrainian and English languages.
The quarterly almanac “International Review” is a specialized publication designed for the experts, diplomats and a broad variety of readers interested in the problems of Ukraine’s foreign policy, international relations and international security. The publication includes the current analysis of the international processes, events and trends of international life, as well as decisions made by the country’s leaders in the sphere of foreign policy and security.
The almanac provides its publishing space to leading Ukrainian and foreign experts in political science and international relations for their coverage of the urgent problems and current international and associated with the foreign policy internal political issues. Expert evaluations and analysis of the most important topics and events of international life happened in the course of the quarter can be found on the pages of the relevant issue.
The aim of the quarterly almanac is to make a broad variety of readers both in Ukraine and abroad familiar with international and political processes taking place in the country and in the world, to facilitate the openness and predictability of Ukraine’s foreign policy.
The almanac is published in the Ukrainian and English languages.
On March 31, 2010 a meeting of the teaching staff and students of the Diplomatic Academy, as well as representatives of research and analytical centers, professors and students from renowned universities in Ukraine was held with leading experts in the field of foreign policy and security Strobe Talbott - a former Deputy of State Secretary in the Clinton administration, the President of the most authoritative American "think tank" Brookings Institution, and Xavier Solana, the former EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (1999-2009), former NATO Secretary General (1995-1999). Honourable guests visited the Diplomatic Academy on the invitation and due to support of the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and “Yalta European Strategy”. The moderator of the meeting was a well-known Ukrainian journalist Andriy Kulykov.
On March 22, 2010 Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine, MFA of Ukraine and Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University signed the Memorandum of Cooperation for the period of five years.
On May 22, 2010 the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine holds an Open door day. Future applicants, their parents and dear guests are welcome to participate in the event.
On 23-24 February 2010 Professional Development Center for Diplomats held a thematic short-term workshop on diplomatic protocol and etiquette for diplomatic staff.
On February 17-21, 2010 Rector of the Diplomatic Academy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine prof. B. Humeniuk and the Head of Global and Regional Systems Department prof. S. Shergin participated in the international conference «"Yalta system" and the current world order: the problems of global and regional security». The conference was devoted to the 65-th anniversary of the Crimean (Yalta) conference and was held at the Livadia Palace-Museum (Yalta, Autonomous Republic of Crimea) with the participation of leading scientists, scholars, researchers, experts and practitioners from Ukraine and Russia, MPs of ARC, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps of Russia, USA, the United Kingdom and the European Commission to Ukraine.
